Mt. Fuji Day Trip From Tokyo: Tour vs DIY, Cost per Person

The short answer

• By highway bus, DIY costs 1,280 yen less than a shared tour. That is for a day close to the tour's route: the sightseeing bus and Chureito Pagoda. DIY is 6,520 yen per person (6,120 yen if you pay for the bus online). The shared tour was 7,800 yen.
• The real gap is smaller. The tour also covers Oshino Hakkai and Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba. The DIY total leaves out the bus to Oshino Hakkai and Nenba entry.
• By the Fuji Excursion train both ways, DIY costs 2,720 yen more than the shared tour.
• For six adults, a private tour is 6,667 yen each. That is 1,133 yen less than the shared tour, and 147 yen more than DIY by bus. If you would take the train, a private tour costs less than DIY from four people.
• The ropeway is not on the main shared tour. If you want it, go DIY and add 1,000 yen.

So price alone rarely decides it. Group size, how you travel and how much free time you want matter more.

Getting from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko

Things to know about this table:

• Fuji Excursion price: 4,200 yen is Fujikyu's official total (2,580 yen fare plus 1,620 yen express ticket).
• Other ways to buy the express ticket: a JR East ticketless express ticket is 100 yen less (4,100 yen in total). Buying the express ticket on the train costs 260 yen more. The calculator uses 4,200 yen.
• No non-reserved seats on the Fuji Excursion. When it is full, you can still buy a "seat-unspecified ticket" and stand in the deck area (JR East).
• Fuji Excursion trains: 4 round trips a day, plus one extra round trip in some periods. The weekday extra train (11:34 from Shinjuku) runs on weekdays from October 1 to November 30. The weekend extra train (9:02 from Shinjuku) runs on weekends and holidays from August 22 to November 29.
• Child fare on the highway bus: half the adult fare (1,100 yen).
• From Shibuya: the Shibuya – Kawaguchiko bus is 2,300 yen for adults from July 1, 2026 (Tokyu Bus). The calculator does not include it.

Booking the Shinjuku – Kawaguchiko bus from October 1, 2026

For buses running on or after October 1, 2026, Fujikyu's official booking site, FUJIYAMA CONNECT, handles seat search, booking and payment on the Busta Shinjuku – Kawaguchiko route (Fujikyu press release, August 6, 2026, Japanese).

Fujikyu says the fares do not change. Booking by phone, at the counter and on Highway Bus .com continues.

As of September 19, 2026, Fujikyu's route page has two booking links: one for trips up to September 30, 2026, and one for trips from October 1, 2026. Pick the link by the day you ride, not the day you book.

Getting around Kawaguchiko

Oshino Hakkai is free to walk around. We have not checked the bus fare to get there, so the calculator leaves it out.

Tour prices, as of September 19, 2026

These are the prices GetYourGuide showed on its Mount Fuji page on September 19, 2026. They are the selling prices after any discount, per person unless marked.

What the shared tour covers: in the main tour we checked (about 4,500 reviews), the price included transport from Tokyo and back, an English-speaking guide, and road tolls and parking. Lunch was not included.

Its stops were Oshino Hakkai, Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba, Chureito Pagoda and Oishi Park. For a limited period, it included a free entry ticket for Nenba. The ropeway was not included, and it was not on the route.

So the DIY cost in this article uses a day close to that route: the sightseeing bus (which goes to Oishi Park) and the train to Chureito Pagoda. It does not include the bus to Oshino Hakkai or Nenba entry, because we have not checked those prices. The ropeway is an extra you can only add on a DIY day. Each tour is different, so check the details before you book.

Calculator: tour or DIY for your group

The calculator adds up the official fares above. See how the numbers are worked out.

How to fill it in:

1. Enter the number of adults in your group.
2. Choose how you would get there and back on your own, and whether you would pay for the bus online.
3. Choose what you want to do around Kawaguchiko. The ropeway is off at first, because the main shared tour does not include it.
4. Change the tour prices to the prices you see today, if they differ.

What the calculator does not include:

• Lunch. The main shared tour we checked does not include it either, so it costs about the same both ways.
• Oshino Hakkai and Nenba, which the main shared tour includes. We have not checked the bus fare to Oshino Hakkai (the site itself is free, except Sokonuke Pond) or the Nenba entry fee. So DIY looks lower than a DIY day with the same stops as the tour.
• Child fares. DIY fares for children are about half. We did not check tour prices for children, so we do not compare them.
• Getting to Shinjuku or Tokyo Station from your hotel. You pay this either way.
• Other ways to buy the Fuji Excursion ticket: 100 yen less with a JR East ticketless ticket, 260 yen more if you buy the express ticket on the train.
• Changes in tour prices. The starting prices are from September 19, 2026.
• The Shibuya bus and the JR TOKYO Wide Pass.

Scenarios: four common day trips

Cost per adult, lunch not included. Official fares were checked on September 19, 2026. Tour prices are what GetYourGuide showed that day (7,800 yen shared, 40,000 yen per private group of up to 6). They change often.

Every DIY row includes the sightseeing bus pass and the train to Chureito Pagoda, the part of the tour's route we could price. It does not include the bus to Oshino Hakkai or Nenba entry, which the tour includes. Only the "+ ropeway" row adds the ropeway, which the tour does not include.

Two people by highway bus

DIY by highway bus costs 6,520 yen per person, with the sightseeing bus pass and the train to Chureito Pagoda. The shared tour was 7,800 yen. DIY is 1,280 yen less, or 1,680 yen less if you pay for the bus online.

The real gap is smaller than that. The tour also takes you to Oshino Hakkai and Nenba, and the DIY total does not include the bus or entry for those.

If you add the ropeway, which the tour does not include, DIY is 7,520 yen. That is 280 yen less than the tour. At that point, decide by how you want to spend the day (see the time and freedom section below), not by price.

Two people on the Fuji Excursion

The Fuji Excursion round trip alone costs 8,400 yen. That is more than the whole shared tour. Add the sightseeing bus pass and the train to Chureito Pagoda, and DIY comes to 10,520 yen, which is 2,720 yen more than the tour.

Taking the train one way and the bus the other way brings DIY to 8,520 yen. That is still 720 yen more than the tour.

Four people on the Fuji Excursion

For four adults going by train, DIY is still 10,520 yen each. A private tour is 10,000 yen each, which is 520 yen less than DIY.

The shared tour, at 7,800 yen, costs the least of the three.

Six people: private tour or DIY

A private tour at 40,000 yen split six ways is 6,667 yen each. That is 1,133 yen less than the shared tour. Six is the group size where this starts: with five people, the private tour is 8,000 yen each, more than the shared tour.

Against DIY by bus (6,520 yen), the private tour costs 147 yen more. The two are about the same. If your group would take the Fuji Excursion instead, the private tour is 3,853 yen less than DIY.

On GetYourGuide, the 40,000 yen private tour was priced for a group of up to 6 people (as of September 19, 2026). Private tours ranged from 40,000 to 55,136 yen per group, and group limits differ. Check that the tour you pick takes your whole group.

What the price does not show: time and freedom

A few more points:

• Highway buses can be late. Fujikyu says it does not refund the fare when traffic, accidents or bad weather delay the bus.
• The sightseeing bus is frequent. The Red Line leaves Kawaguchiko Station every 15 minutes between 9:00 and the 12:00 hour. It takes 27 minutes to the Oishi Park stop.
• A tour picks the stops for you. DIY lets you stay longer where you like, but you plan it yourself.

Will you see Mt. Fuji?

It depends on the weather, whether you take a tour or go on your own. Tours say the same: whether you see the mountain depends on the weather.

What we can show is the pattern by season. Fuji City in Shizuoka publishes the share of days the mountain was seen, based on records from 1991 to 2023. We averaged the daily figures by month.

Read this table with care:

• It was recorded in Fuji City, on the south side of the mountain. It is not Kawaguchiko, which is on the north side. These are not the chances of seeing Mt. Fuji from Kawaguchiko.
• The city observed three times a day (8:00, 12:00 and 16:00) from the city hall.
• The PDF does not say whether its share means the whole mountain or part of it, or which time of day it uses.

The pattern is clear, though. December and January were the highest. June to August were the lowest.

The Fifth Station in winter

The bus to the Fifth Station does not run when the Fuji Subaru Line road is closed or open only to the first station. When the road is open only to the fourth station, the bus turns back there (Fujikyu Yamanashi Bus).

Some tours also swap the Fifth Station for another stop in winter. So in winter, whether you reach the Fifth Station depends on the road, tour or no tour.

Booking a tour, or doing it yourself

If a tour fits: shared or private

A shared tour suits a small group who are happy with a set route and a guide. On price, it is the lower-cost choice when your DIY plan uses the Fuji Excursion train.

A private tour suits a group of six, where it costs less than the shared tour and about the same as DIY by bus. It also costs less than DIY by train from four people. It can also suit families, but we did not check child prices for tours, so we cannot compare them.

• The cancellation terms. The main shared tour we checked allowed free cancellation up to 24 hours before
• For a private tour, how many people it takes
• Whether lunch is included

If you go on your own: what to book and when

1. Highway bus: seats are reserved. Booking opens one month before your travel date, on the same date, and closes 30 minutes before the bus leaves its first stop. For buses on or after October 1, 2026, you can also book on FUJIYAMA CONNECT (Fujikyu Bus).
2. Fuji Excursion: all seats are reserved. Sales open at 10:00, one month before the travel date. One place to buy is JR-EAST Train Reservation (for inbound travelers) (Fujikyu Railway).
3. Sightseeing bus 1-Day Pass: no booking needed. You can buy it on the bus (Fujikyu Bus).
4. Ropeway: timed tickets are sold online (Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway).

Common questions

Is a Mt. Fuji day tour worth it?

On price, it depends on how you would go on your own. By highway bus, DIY costs a little less than a shared tour, before the Oshino Hakkai bus and Nenba entry the tour includes. By the Fuji Excursion train, the tour costs less. For six adults, a private tour costs less than the shared tour and about the same as DIY by bus. Try your own plan in the calculator.

Do I need to book the Shinjuku – Kawaguchiko bus in advance?

Yes, it is a reserved-seat bus. Booking opens one month before, on the same date. The counter sells tickets until 10 minutes before departure. The Busta Shinjuku operator warns that on the day, you may not get a ticket for the bus you want (Busta Shinjuku notice, Japanese).

What if the Fuji Excursion is sold out?

All seats are reserved, and there are no non-reserved cars. When it is full, JR East still sells a "seat-unspecified ticket", and you stand in the deck area. The highway bus is the other option.

Which month is Mt. Fuji most visible?

In Fuji City's records, December and January had the highest share of days with the mountain in view, and June to August the lowest. These records are from Fuji City on the south side, not Kawaguchiko. In 2025, Fuji City saw the whole mountain on 136 days at its 8:00 observation, and the whole or part of it on 231 days (Fuji City).

Can I get to the Fifth Station in winter?

Only when the Fuji Subaru Line road is open. The bus does not run when the road is closed. Some tours also change their winter stops.

Does a Mt. Fuji tour include lunch and the ropeway?

In the main shared tour we checked, lunch was not included. The ropeway was not included either, and it was not on the route. Tours differ, so check the booking page.

Is the JR TOKYO Wide Pass worth it for a Fuji day trip?

Not for this trip alone. The pass costs 16,000 yen for 3 days. A Fuji Excursion round trip bought normally is 8,400 yen, about half the pass price.

The pass covers Fujikyu Railway lines. JR East notes that reserved seats on Fujikyu's own Fujisan Express, Fujisan View Express and Fuji Tozan Densha trains cost an additional fee (JR East). We have not checked what the pass covers on the Fuji Excursion, so check with JR East before you rely on it.

The pass is worth a look only if you add other day trips in the same 3 days. The nationwide JR Pass is a different product; we worked out when it pays off in Is the JR Pass Worth It?

Can I take the bus from Shibuya instead?

Yes. The Shibuya – Kawaguchiko bus is 2,300 yen for adults from July 1, 2026 (Tokyu Bus). We did not check its times.
