Hiroshima Day Trip From Osaka: Pass vs Tickets vs Tour

In Hiroshima, the Genbaku Dome (Atomic Bomb Dome) stands where it survived the first atomic bomb on August 6, 1945. UNESCO calls it "the only structure left standing in the area where the first atomic bomb exploded" and says it is "preserved in the same state as immediately after the bombing." A short trip away, Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima island is built "with the sea in the foreground and mountains in the background," and was founded in the 12th century by Taira no Kiyomori. The JR West Miyajima Ferry runs a "Great Torii ferry" from Miyajimaguchi between 9:10 and 16:10, and it passes closest to the big gate.

Both places are World Heritage sites (1996). Miyajima had a record number of visitors in 2025, above the 2024 figure of 4.85 million, and a second record year in a row (Hatsukaichi City, Japanese). You can reach both from Osaka in one day.

The hard part is choosing how to pay. This post compares four ways: the regular fare, the discount one-way ticket, the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass and a guided tour. For tours it gives a checklist, not prices. The calculator uses adult fares for one person.

The short answer

• The regular fare is the highest of the three rail options in every case we calculated. Reserved seats on Sakura/Hikari on an ordinary date are 20,840 yen round trip, or 21,900 yen on Nozomi. With Miyajima by JR and the JR ferry, the pass and the one-way tickets each come out 5,040 yen lower (Sakura/Hikari, ordinary date).
• The pass and the one-way tickets tie if you go to Miyajima by JR and the JR ferry. The pass costs 1,200 yen more than two one-way tickets (17,000 versus 15,800). The JR train and the JR ferry to Miyajima cost 1,200 yen round trip (840 plus 360), and the pass includes both.
• Without Miyajima, or with the streetcar and Matsudai ferry, the two one-way tickets are 1,200 yen cheaper. More other JR West rides in the same five days make the pass better.
• The one-way ticket is sold overseas only. JR West says it "is not available for purchase within Japan." We did not check any seller's price, so the calculator lets you type it in.

Regular fare: it changes with the date

The fare is a ticket plus a reserved-seat surcharge. From Osaka Station, the ticket is the same as from Shin-Osaka (Osaka City fare). The train from Osaka to Shin-Osaka takes 4 minutes.

The surcharge changed with the date. We searched every day from September 19 to November 1, 2026. These are the values we saw:

We did not get JR West's full season table, so we list only what we saw. We did not see a Sakura/Hikari price for those October dates, so we do not guess one. We did not check whether the non-reserved fare changes with the date.

We also did not check whether the JR Central fare revision of October 1, 2026 (a new Supreme Class Cabin) changes the reserved-seat surcharge. Check the fare on or after that date.

The discount one-way ticket is sold overseas only

Two conditions decide who can use it. You need a passport issued by a foreign government, and you must have entered Japan as a "Temporary Visitor." The pass has the same conditions. JR West's English page says the ticket is "Available from select overseas travel agencies." It also says: "The 'Discounted One-way Ticket' is not available for purchase within Japan."

JR West's page gives no list of stations inside "Osaka City" and "Hiroshima City" that we could read. We read Shin-Osaka and Osaka as inside Osaka City, but did not confirm it.

Luggage: on the Sanyo Shinkansen, a bag with three sides adding up to more than 160 cm and less than 250 cm needs a seat with an oversize luggage area. JR West's English page says so.

On the pass price: JR West's English page says its displayed information is as of August 1, 2024. JR West's January 28, 2026 press release (Japanese, PDF) still lists 17,000 yen for adults. The price was last revised on October 1, 2023.

Miyajima: the pass includes it, the one-way ticket does not

The pass covers the JR train from Hiroshima to Miyajimaguchi and the JR West ferry across to the island. The one-way ticket does not. That is why the two options tie in one common plan.

The pass costs 17,000 yen. Two one-way tickets cost 15,800 yen. The gap is 1,200 yen. The JR train round trip is 840 yen and the ferry round trip is 360 yen, which adds up to 1,200 yen. JR West does not say why the prices line up, so we do not guess.

Hiroden's fare has been 240 yen on all lines since February 1, 2025, according to Hiroden's notice (Japanese). Its English fare page still shows some older fares, so we used the Japanese notice. The Hiroden 1-day ticket says it "is not valid for JR Miyajima Ferry."

Hiroden's English page lists the 1-day streetcar and ferry ticket as valid on all streetcar lines and on the Miyajimaguchi to Miyajima ferry of Miyajima Matsudai Kisen. The fare notice above says all lines means the city lines and the Miyajima line. We did not check the Matsudai ferry fare alone or the streetcar travel time from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi. Calculator: which is cheaper for your day

Use it to try your own plan. Four notes:

1. Pick the regular fare's train and date. Then type in the one-way ticket and pass prices from the seller's page. The default is JR West's list price.
2. If you go to Miyajima, pick your route. The pass covers the JR train and JR ferry. It does not cover the streetcar and Matsudai ferry.
3. Pick the places you will pay to enter. The same amount is added to all three columns, so the gaps stay the same. Use the total to compare with a tour price.
4. If you will ride other JR West lines in the same five days, such as to Kyoto, type in what you would pay without the pass.

What the calculator leaves out:

• Tours. Prices are not shown here, and tours include different things.
• The Matsudai ferry fare on its own. We did not check it.
• Sellers' prices for the one-way ticket and the pass. You type them in.
• The full season table for the surcharge, and the effect of the October 1, 2026 JR Central revision.
• Children and infants. We did not calculate child fares. Age bands and prices differ by operator: for example, Hiroden's 1-day streetcar and ferry ticket is 550 yen for a child against 1,000 yen for an adult, which is not half, and the Miyajima Ropeway and the JR West Miyajima Ferry list children as ages 6 to 12 on their English pages. Admission fees have their own child prices. Check each operator and place.
• Non-reserved seats and Green Car.
• Lunch, souvenirs and lockers.
• The Have Fun in Hiroshima Pass and the Visit Hiroshima Tourist Pass.
• Hotels.

Scenarios: five ways the day can go

How to read the table below: it shows one adult in a reserved seat, as of September 19, 2026. The regular fare is Sakura/Hikari on an ordinary date (10,420 yen each way). The tickets and the pass use JR West's list price. We did not check sellers' prices. For more about who writes these posts, see About.

If your day looks like one of these, the numbers follow. Your own day will differ, so use the calculator.

City only: the Peace Memorial Park and museum

S1 is a day without Miyajima. You take the streetcar twice (240 yen each) and go into the museum for 200 yen. The museum fee goes into all three columns, so it does not change the gaps.

Here the two tickets cost 1,200 yen less than the pass, because the pass has no Miyajima trip to cover. Against the regular fare, the pass saves 3,840 yen and the tickets save 5,040 yen.

City and Miyajima by JR and the JR ferry

S2 is the tie. The two tickets cost 15,800 yen and then you pay 1,300 yen for the JR train (840), the JR ferry (360) and the visitor tax (100). The pass costs 17,000 yen and you pay only the 100 yen tax.

Both come to 17,580 yen with two streetcar rides. JR West does not say why the pass and the two tickets differ by the same 1,200 yen. The Great Torii ferry belongs to this route (9:10 to 16:10 from Miyajimaguchi), and the pass includes it.

City and Miyajima by streetcar and Matsudai ferry

S3 uses the Hiroden 1-day streetcar and ferry ticket (1,000 yen, visitor tax included), so the two tickets are 1,200 yen cheaper again. The pass has no part in this route, so it just adds 1,000 yen.

We did not check the Matsudai ferry fare on its own. Hiroden's English page says the 1,000 yen ticket is valid on all streetcar lines and the Miyajimaguchi ferry, so S3 assumes the streetcar to Miyajimaguchi is covered. Check Hiroden's page before you go.

Adding Kyoto or Nara in the same five days

S4 adds a round trip to Kyoto by Special Rapid train (580 yen each way, about 29 minutes). All three columns use the Nozomi fare here. Every other JR West ride the pass covers is a ride you would otherwise pay for.

The more of these you plan, the better the pass looks. Without Miyajima by JR, the pass beats the tickets once your other JR West rides total more than 1,200 yen. A Kyoto round trip alone (1,160 yen) is just under that. With Miyajima by JR and the JR ferry, any other JR West ride tips it toward the pass.

The break-even rule depends on two prices.

• The pass costs less when this gap is smaller than what the pass saves you: pass price minus two one-way tickets.
• What the pass saves you is the JR train and JR ferry to Miyajima, plus any other JR West rides.

With list prices, the gap is 17,000 minus 15,800, or 1,200 yen. The JR train and ferry cost 1,200 yen. So they tie.

If a seller's one-way ticket is over 7,900 yen, the pass wins on the JR and JR ferry route. With the list price for the pass and no JR Miyajima trip, the tickets win up to 8,500 yen each.

Guided tours: what to check, not what they cost

We do not show tour prices. They change by date and option, and we do not copy tour listings. Tours also include different things, so a single number would not compare fairly.

Check these items on the product page:

• Whether the Shinkansen tickets from Osaka are included, and where you meet the guide.
• Whether you ride the train with the guide or on your own.
• Whether the Itsukushima Shrine entry fee is included.
• Whether the Peace Memorial Museum entry fee is included.
• Whether lunch is included.
• Whether the ferry is included.
• The guide's languages.
• The group size, or whether the page shows none.
• Free cancellation: how many hours or days before the start.
• What time the tour ends compared with the last Shinkansen, 21:59 in our search (see the next section).

To compare with doing it yourself, follow three steps. First, put your admission fees in the calculator and note the total. Second, find what the tour includes. Third, add the same items to the do-it-yourself side, so you compare like with like. We did not price lunch, so if a tour includes lunch, remember that it is not priced here. We also did not check whether tour Shinkansen tickets are discounted tickets.

If you prefer not to plan the ferry and admission tickets, a tour may suit you. If you want to choose your own pace, the calculator shows what the rail options cost.

How many hours do you get in Hiroshima?

For departures on September 25 to 27, 2026 (the days we searched), the first Hikari 681 leaves Shin-Osaka at 06:06 and arrives in Hiroshima at 07:54. The last Hikari 682 leaves Hiroshima at 21:59 and reaches Shin-Osaka at 23:32. That is 14 hours and 5 minutes in Hiroshima (07:54 to 21:59). Times can differ by date, so check the timetable for your day.

Picture the morning. You arrive at 07:54, and the Peace Memorial Museum is open from 7:30 in September to November. The first Great Torii ferry leaves Miyajimaguchi at 9:10. The JR train from Hiroshima to Miyajimaguchi takes about 27 minutes and the ferry about 10 minutes. We did not check the connecting train times for that morning, so look them up.

Evening depends on the season. The shrine gate closes at 18:00 until October 14, and the museum stays open to 19:00 in autumn (last entry 30 minutes before).

People online argue over whether Hiroshima is a day trip. These numbers do not decide that. They show the time you would have.

Opening hours change by season

Some pages give one time for the shrine all year. The official page lists the seasons above. The museum's page also lists extra evening time slots that need an online reservation; we did not check them, so the times above are the regular hours.

The museum is closed on December 30 and 31, and the museum announced a closure for exhibit changes on February 15 to 20, 2027. Its front page recommends buying a web ticket in advance, and says entry may be limited at busy times. Large bags are not allowed inside; the lockers on the ground floor of the East Building cost 100 yen. Sources: Itsukushima Shrine; Peace Memorial Museum.

One day or one night?

Hiroshima Prefecture had 1.687 million foreign visitors in 2025, according to the Japan Tourism Agency. The average visitor spent about 49,000 yen per person there and stayed 2.5 nights. Osaka Prefecture had 16.996 million visitors, 98,000 yen per person and 3.5 nights. The prefecture figures do not include travel between prefectures.

Hiroshima City counted 14.76 million visitors in 2025. About 48.2% of them stayed overnight, and the average spend was 28,540 yen per person. These are city figures for all visitors, not only foreign visitors (Hiroshima City, Japanese).

We did not check hotel prices in Hiroshima, so the calculator leaves out a night's stay.

How to buy

The discount one-way ticket

You cannot buy it in Japan, so you need an overseas travel agency. Start with JR West's English page for the rules. Online travel sites list the ticket. We did not check sellers' prices, so type the price you see into the calculator.

The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass

You can buy the pass from JR West itself. Use JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION; sales open at 10:00 one month before the first day, and you pay by credit card. Travel sites also sell it. We did not check whether they charge the same, so compare with JR West's list price of 17,000 yen. JR West's page says "Product sales prices are set according to the date of purchase."

The refund fee is 10% of the price (minimum 220 yen). Nothing is refunded after the pass starts. The five days are in a row and cannot be changed. If you need a nationwide pass instead, see Is the JR Pass Worth It?

Common questions

Is a Hiroshima day trip from Osaka worth it?

We do not judge that. The numbers: 14 hours in Hiroshima between the first and last Shinkansen we searched. Miyajima needs about 27 minutes by JR and about 10 minutes by ferry each way. Decide with your own priorities.

How much is the Shinkansen from Osaka to Hiroshima?

For a reserved seat on an ordinary date, 10,420 yen on Sakura/Hikari and 10,950 yen on Nozomi, one way. On the dates we searched, it ranged from 10,220 to 11,350 yen. Some pages show only one price, so check the date.

Is the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass worth it for a day trip?

It depends on your plan. With Miyajima by JR and the JR ferry, the pass costs the same as two discounted one-way tickets and about 5,040 yen less than the regular fare (Sakura/Hikari, ordinary date). More JR West rides in five days favor the pass. Use the calculator.

Can I buy the discount one-way ticket in Japan?

No. JR West says it is not available for purchase within Japan. Buy it from an overseas travel agency. You need a foreign passport and Temporary Visitor status. It is valid for one day, has no stopovers, and the start date can be changed once.

Does the pass include the Nozomi?

Yes. JR West's press release (Japanese, PDF) and JR-Odekake Net (Japanese) say Nozomi and Mizuho are included. The one-way ticket also includes Nozomi. S Work seats are not valid on the pass (JR-Odekake Net, Japanese).

Does the pass include Miyajima?

It includes the JR train to Miyajimaguchi and the JR West Miyajima Ferry. The 100 yen visitor tax is extra. The streetcar and Matsudai ferry are not included.

What are the opening hours of Itsukushima Shrine?

They depend on the season. See the table above. The gate hours are 6:30 to 18:00 from March 1 to October 14, and 6:30 to 17:30 from January 4 to the end of February. See the table for the rest.

Do I need to book the Peace Memorial Museum?

The museum's front page recommends a web ticket in advance and warns of possible entry limits at busy times. Entry costs 200 yen. We did not check how to buy the web ticket.

What is the Great Torii ferry?

A JR West Miyajima Ferry service from Miyajimaguchi between 9:10 and 16:10 that goes closest to the big torii gate. The pass includes it.

What time is the last Shinkansen back to Osaka?

On September 25 to 27, 2026, Hikari 682 left Hiroshima at 21:59 and reached Shin-Osaka at 23:32. Times can differ by day. Check My Dia for your date.

Can I use the pass on the expressway bus?

No. JR West Bus route buses are included, but expressway buses are not. The pass is also not valid from Hiroshima to Hakata, from Shin-Osaka to Tokyo, or on the Kyushu Shinkansen.

Do I need a seat reservation with the pass?

You can ride reserved seats with the pass. For passes with unlimited seat reservations, JR West says to reserve at the JR ticket office from the 7th booking. Large bags need a seat with an oversize luggage area (see above).

Is a guided tour better than going on my own?

We do not judge that. Use the tour checklist and the calculator, then decide if the included items and cancellation terms suit you.

Can I get a refund?

The pass: 10% fee (minimum 220 yen), none after it starts. The one-way ticket: 560 yen or more, see the table above. For tours, check the cancellation terms on the product page.
